Six to eight hours a day in a chair may be standard for most Kiwis, but discomfort doesn’t have to be part of the job description.
Ergonomic office chairs are designed to work with your body rather than against it. They provide adjustable support at the lumbar region, encourage a natural spinal curve, and allow each user to set up their workstation in a way that suits them.
We’ve selected the five best ergonomic office chairs based on AFRDI certifications, hands-on product expertise, and a deep understanding of what works in NZ offices day in, day out.

Best Overall: EDEN Spectrum 3 Lever Chair

The gold standard for ergonomic seating in New Zealand.
The Eden Spectrum 3 Lever Chair is one of our best-selling ergonomic chairs for more than a few reasons.
Through a combination of genuine adjustability, proven durability, and strong certification credentials, it's a comfortable chair for long hours.
Its heavy-duty three-lever mechanism allows independent adjustment of seat height, seat angle, and backrest angle - meaning each user can dial in their position precisely rather than accepting a generic setup.
The uniquely contoured backrest provides powerful lumbar support that actively discourages slouching, which is where many chairs fall short over the course of a long working day.
Robust construction and a heavy-duty mechanism make it well suited to busy office environments where the chair is in use day after day.

Style and ergonomics in equal measure.
The EDEN Sport 3.50 High Back is the chair for offices where design and ergonomics both matter.
The modern square-style backrest with its clean, architectural lines suits contemporary open-plan environments across Auckland and Wellington's CBD, while the high-back profile delivers serious spinal support from lumbar all the way to the upper back and shoulders.
The generous 510mm x 510mm seat is one of the larger options in this price range, making it a comfortable choice for a wider range of body types.
The ratchet back height adjustment allows precise lumbar positioning, and the three-lever mechanism covers all the key adjustments a full-day desk worker needs.

Best for Airflow and Breathability: Metro II Nylon Base

The mesh chair built for New Zealand's warmer offices.
The Metro II Nylon Base brings together the latest in ergonomic mesh technology with a sophisticated contemporary aesthetic.
The ventilated mesh back provides maximum air circulation during long work sessions, making it a standout choice for warmer office environments. Or users who find upholstered chairs uncomfortable through summer.
What sets the Metro II apart from a standard mesh chair is the quality of its lumbar support system.
The adjustable design conforms to the spine's natural lordotic curve, providing a flexible yet firm support that moves with the user rather than holding them in place.
Combined with the elastic knit seat upholstery, it's a comfortable all-day chair rather than just a cool-looking one.

Best Mid-Back Chair: EDEN Swatch 3.40 Mid Back

Focused lumbar support with genuine freedom of movement.
The EDEN Swatch 3.40 Mid Back is the pick for users who want precise ergonomic support without the full coverage of a high-back chair.
The mid-back design is a deliberate choice: the shorter backrest provides targeted lumbar and lower back support while allowing the upper body more freedom to move, rotate, and reach. This matters in roles involving frequent collaboration, movement between tasks, or regular reaching across a workspace.
The modern aesthetic suits a wide range of office environments, and the versatile design accommodates most body types comfortably.
The three-lever mechanism with ratchet back height adjustment allows precise positioning of the lumbar support point, which is the key to getting the mid-back format to work well for different users.

- Seat size: 480mm wide x 460mm deep
- Back height: 410mm
- Seat height: 420 to 550mm

Best suited to: collaborative workplaces, users who move frequently during the day, and those who find high-back chairs too restrictive through the upper body.
Best Value: Buro Roma 3 Lever High Back

Proper ergonomic support at an accessible price.
The Buro Roma 3 Lever High Back makes a strong case for itself on pure value.
It's AFRDI rated, carries a 10-year warranty, and delivers pronounced adjustable lumbar support through an ample moulded seat and back cushion - features that chairs at this price point frequently skip.
The ratchet height-adjustable back allows the lumbar support to be clicked up or down the frame until it sits correctly in the arch of the lower back. This detail separates a genuinely ergonomic chair from one that merely claims to be.
Endorsed by the Australian Physiotherapy Association and described by osteopath and ergonomist Andrew Wilson as "a very good all-round chair" with "a good range of adjustments that will suit a wide range of users."

How to Get the Most From Your Ergonomic Chair
Buying the right chair is half the battle. Setting it up correctly is the other - and it's where a lot of people fall short.
Here are the key adjustments to get right from day one:
Seat height: Adjust so your feet rest flat on the floor and your knees are close to a right angle, with your thighs roughly parallel to the floor. If your feet don't reach the floor at the correct seat height, a footrest is worth adding.
Backrest angle: The backrest should provide firm support to the lower back at a slightly reclined angle, ideally between 100 and 110 degrees. A perfectly upright 90-degree position actually increases pressure on the lumbar discs compared to a slight recline.
Lumbar support height: Use the ratchet adjustment to position the lumbar support so it sits in the natural arch of your lower back - not at the middle of your back, and not at your hips. Getting this right is the single biggest factor in long-term comfort.
Armrests: Set armrest height so your elbows rest lightly on the pads with your shoulders relaxed downward. If your shoulders are raised to reach the armrests, they're too high. Armrests set correctly take the load off the trapezius muscles and reduce the upper-back tension that builds up through a long working day.
The right ergonomic chair, set up correctly for the person using it, is an investment in comfort, productivity, and long-term health.
