Large Office Chairs

Kiwis are built differently. Our chairs need to be too.

Most office chairs are designed around European sizing assumptions that don't reflect the local market. This range is different. Our large office chairs come with higher weight ratings, wider seat pans, taller backrests, and adjustable seat depth.

That means a chair that fits a broader cross-section of the NZ workforce, instead of one you have to work around.

Who This Range Is For

Taller individuals, generally over 190 cm, who find standard seat depth and backrest height fall short of proper support.

Larger-framed individuals who need a wider seat and higher weight rating for comfortable, supported all-day sitting.

Office managers and procurement teams sourcing one or two chairs to accommodate specific staff needs within a wider fit-out.

Home office workers who've found standard chairs uncomfortable for long working days and want a chair properly sized to their frame.

HR teams managing workplace accommodations, where a correctly sized chair is part of meeting health and safety obligations for an individual employee.

What Are Large Office Chairs?

Large office chairs are built with bigger dimensions across the board: wider seats, deeper seat pans, taller backrests, and wider-set armrests. The goal is proportional support.

A taller person needs a higher backrest to support their upper back and neck. A broader person needs a wider seat so their hips aren't pressing against the chair's sides all day.

These chairs often overlap with heavy duty chairs, but the two terms aren't identical. "Large" describes the chair's physical dimensions: width, depth, and height. "Heavy duty" describes the weight rating, typically the load the cylinder, base, and frame are tested to handle.

Many large chairs in this range carry both larger dimensions and a higher weight rating, but it's worth checking both specifications separately rather than assuming one implies the other.

If you're searching for a wide seat office chair, a tall-back office chair, an extra wide computer chair, or a chair rated for users over 140kg, this is the right range to start with.

Why Large Office Chairs Matter

A chair that's too small for your frame doesn't just feel uncomfortable. It actively works against good posture.

If the seat is too narrow, you sit with your hips compressed against the armrests or sides, which affects circulation and posture over a working day. If the seat pan is too shallow, your thighs aren't fully supported, putting more load through your lower back. If the backrest is too short, your upper back and shoulders get no support at all, which is often where tension and pain build up first.

For a larger or taller person, a correctly sized large chair generally provides better ergonomic support than a standard chair forced to fit, because the support points (lumbar curve, seat depth, backrest height) actually line up with the body using them. In the right seat, you shouldn’t feel like you’re perching.

From an employer's perspective, this also matters under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015. Providing appropriately sized seating for staff who need it is part of providing a safe working environment, and it's a straightforward, low-cost way to address a real comfort and posture issue.

Which NZ Workplaces Need Large Office Chairs

Wellington's government and public sector have strict procurement requirements, making AFRDI and BIFMA certification more than a marketing point.

Auckland's CBD finance and legal firms along Shortland Street and Fanshawe Street tend to specify higher-end ergonomic chairs where long hours at a desk are the norm.

Hamilton and Tauranga's growing professional services sectors are increasingly specifying commercial-grade seating rather than retail furniture as their offices mature.

Dunedin's university and health sector presence creates demand for durable, easy-to-clean seating that holds up across shift workers and multiple users.

A Buying Guide: Choosing the Right Large Office Chair

Start With Your Own Dimensions

Before looking at chair specs, get a rough sense of your own numbers. Your height determines the backrest height and seat-to-floor range you need. Your hip width and thigh length determine seat width and seat depth.

If you're around 190 cm or taller, prioritise backrest height and overall chair height.

If your priority is seat width or weight capacity, focus on the seat dimensions and weight rating instead, since these aren't always linked. Agile Office Furniture offers bariatric chairs rated over 200kg as well.

Seat Width and Depth

Seat width on a large chair typically starts around 50cm to 55cm, compared to roughly 45cm to 48cm on a standard chair. Wider seats give your hips and thighs room without contact against the chair's sides.

Seat depth adjustment, often called a seat slide, lets you move the seat pan forward or back so your knees sit at the right angle relative to the seat edge. This is one of the most important features on a large chair, because seat depth needs vary more between individuals than seat width does.

Backrest Height

A taller backrest supports more of your spine, up through your shoulder blades and sometimes into the neck on higher-back models. If you're tall, check the backrest height specification against your own torso length, instead of relying on the chair's overall height, which includes the base and cylinder.

Weight Rating and Heavy Duty Specifications

Large office chairs in this range typically carry weight ratings from 140kg upward, often aligning with the heavy duty range. The weight rating reflects testing on the cylinder, base, and frame, not just the upholstery.

Look for a chair with a documented, tested weight rating. An AFRDI rating on a heavy duty chair means the load capacity has been independently verified. This matters if you're specifying a chair for workplace use and need to document that decision.

Armrests

On a wider chair, armrests are usually set further apart to match the seat width. Check that armrest width suits your frame, and that the armrests adjust in height, and ideally width and pivot, so they can be set to support your forearms without restricting movement.

Warranty and Lifespan

Large and heavy duty chairs typically carry warranties from 10 to 15 years on the frame and mechanism, reflecting the more robust components used to meet higher weight ratings. Check the specific warranty terms on each product, as upholstery warranties are often shorter than frame warranties.

Assembly and Delivery

Some large chairs arrive fully assembled. Others require basic assembly. Agile Office Furniture offers professional assembly services for those who'd prefer not to do it themselves.

Delivery covers Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Hamilton, Tauranga, Dunedin, and most NZ addresses. Metro delivery is free.

Large office chairs are built with bigger dimensions than standard chairs. They have wider seats, deeper seat pans, and taller backrests, designed to provide proportional support for taller or larger users.

"Large" refers to the chair's physical dimensions, width, depth, and height. "Heavy duty" refers to the chair's tested weight capacity, often 140kg or higher. The two often overlap, since chairs built for larger frames are usually also built to handle higher loads, but they're not the same specification and it's worth checking both.

If you're taller than 190cm, or you find standard chair seats too narrow or shallow for comfortable all-day use, a large chair will likely give you better support. The dimensions are built around a bigger frame.

Yes, and often better support than a standard chair for a larger user. When the seat depth, width, and backrest height match your body's proportions, the chair's support points (lumbar curve, seat edge, armrest height) actually line up correctly, which is the foundation of good ergonomics.

A documented weight rating (ideally AFRDI tested), seat depth adjustment, a backrest height suited to your torso length, and armrests that adjust in height and are spaced to suit a wider seat.

Most large and heavy duty chairs carry warranties of 10 to 15 years on the frame and mechanism, reflecting their more robust construction. Upholstery warranties are often shorter. Check the specific terms listed on each product.

Technically, yes, but it's not the best fit. A deeper seat pan may stop a smaller person sitting fully back against the backrest, which removes rather than adds lumbar support. If you're of average build, a standard ergonomic chair designed around average proportions will often fit better.

It depends on the model. Some arrive fully assembled, others need basic assembly. Professional assembly services are available if you'd rather not do it yourself.

Most large office chairs in this range start at 140kg and go up from there, putting them in line with the heavy duty range. The exact rating is listed on each product page and should reflect tested, not estimated, capacity.

Yes. Delivery covers all main NZ centres, with free metro delivery to Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch.
