What is a standing desk?

A standing desk (also called a height-adjustable or sit-stand desk) lets you raise or lower your working surface so you can move between sitting and standing throughout the day. It's a straightforward way to break up long stretches of sitting.

Are standing desks actually better for you?

The evidence is strong. WorkSafe NZ recognises sustained sedentary postures as a contributing factor to musculoskeletal issues, even in office environments that might otherwise seem low-risk. Regular movement between sitting and standing has been linked to reduced back pain, better posture, and improved energy levels. They're not a silver bullet, but they're a meaningful improvement over a fixed desk for most people.

Is a standing desk worth it at home?

Yes, arguably more so than in a traditional office. Home setups tend to be less active by default. A sit-stand desk introduces movement that you'd otherwise miss.

How long should you stand at a standing desk?

A University of Waterloo study found that 30 minutes of standing per hour tends to produce the best results. Standing all day isn't the goal. Movement and variety are.

How do I set the right height?

When standing, your elbows should be at roughly 90 degrees when typing, with your wrists flat. Your monitor's top edge should sit at or just below eye level. Get both right and you'll notice the difference quickly.

Do chiropractors recommend standing desks?

Most chiropractors and other health professionals recommend standing desks, particularly for people dealing with neck strain or lower back pain. They're not a substitute for professional treatment, but regular movement throughout the workday supports what good spinal care is trying to achieve.
